Walking tour of souks and fondouks
The "Fondouk" in Marrakech generally refers to ancient caravanserais or inns that were traditionally used to accommodate travelers and their animals, as well as store their goods during their trading journeys. These historic buildings have been restored and transformed into shops, art galleries, restaurants or tourist accommodation in the Medina of Marrakech. They often retain their traditional architecture with an interior courtyard surrounded by rooms or spaces for visitors.
Perhaps the most famous fondouk in Marrakech is the "Fondouk El Nejjarine", located in the Medina district. Today it houses a museum of wood and leather arts and crafts, offering a fascinating insight into traditional Moroccan crafts. And among the fondouks available in the medina of Marrekch:
- Fondouk Ahshash : This foundouk is also located in the same street, Qa'at Ibn Nahid, not far from the Ibn Yousouf madrasa.
- Fondouk Salas : It is located to the north of the Qa'at Ibn Nahid district, in the heart of the medina's commercial center.
- Fondouk al-Amri : Located at the end of Al Basa Street in the Bab Doukkala district.
- Fonfouk al-Khiriya : It is located in the Amseffah district near the famous Chrab or Chouf fountain.
